Urban Gypsies are an instrumental Jazz/Latin/contemporary band. They represent an exciting direction in Latin / jazz mixed with world music influences. The music varies from fiery guitar virtuosity through to lounge Bossa Nova.The band has been performing for 15 years playing at numerous weddings, events, festivals and clubs. They have supported Buena Vista Social Club, Cassandra Wilson, and many more… They have held residencies and concerts in exclusive Sydney venues including The Basement, The Vanguard, Venue 505, Camelot, Cafe Sydney, Side on Cafe, Merivale, Riverside Theatre, and the Seymour Centre. They have released three Albums to date. Gypsy Fever 2000, Sauvage 2003 and Beautiful Catastrophe 2009. The fourth Album is due for release in 2013/14 “Samsara”.
Gavin was born in Kent, England and moved to Perth Australia in 1981. He studied classical guitar with Perth virtuoso Stephan Bulmer and Colin Reeves. He then went on to complete a certificate and associate degree in jazz and contemporary music at the Perth Conservatorium of Music. He then formed the guitar band Urban Gypsies with Glenn Rogers. They released the widely acclaimed debut CD Gypsy Fever. Gavin Has worked with many other acclaimed musicians. He works in Alchemy Duo with Anatoli Torjinski and with the singer Niyati Parikh in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. He is currently working with Dieter Kleemann who has played guitar in the Sydney scene for over 30 years. Gavin is currently performing and teaching in and around Sydney.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Dieter emerged on the Sydney music scene at just 15 years of age – playing, developing and writing his own brand of jazz-fusion guitar. Throughout his career, his love of jazz and instrumental music has seen him record with bassists Emile Nelson and Steve Hunter, pianist Bill Risby, saxophonist Andrew Oh and smooth Jazz artist, Noel Elmowy. Dieter’s talents are as diverse as they are accomplished, seeing him record on Tim Uluirewa‘s internationally selling gospel albums; perform as a clinician for Ibanez and Line 6; play on musicals Leader of the Pack and Footloose; play with music legends Glen Shorrock and Doug Parkinson; and play for Channel 7’s Popstars Live. He is also an accomplished teacher, lecturing at the Australian Institute of Music and Wesley College.
Anatoli grew up in Odessa, Ukraine and completed his education at Stolyarski Selective Music School, majoring in violoncello, piano and guitar. Graduating from the Odessa Conservatorium of Music as an orchestra performer, soloist and music teacher, Anatoli consequently settled in Sydney, Australia. He played with the Sydney East-West and Willoughby Symphony Orchestras and taught at the Australian Institute of Music, as well as completing a post-graduate performance course at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Stuart Henderson is an experienced Musician with a career spanning over 30 years. He predominantly plays Flamenco and Latin styles including Drum Kit, Cajon or the box drum, Palmas (body percussion), shakers, bells and other auxiliary percussion. Stuart has most recently performed at Womadelaide 2010, Orange Conservatorium, Glasshouse, Canberra Street Theatre, Melbourne Recital Hall and Hobart Peacock Theatre.
